Tuesday 1st May – sunny periods – Woodland Walk - Leith Tower/Place 2
½ miles ****
At last a blue sunny day! We did our exercises then loaded up the van and
left home about 12. We went to Lidl and got a chicken and bits and pieces
to do a meal at Rob’s tonight. The journey was really easy with no hold
ups and we stopped at Leith Hill for a walk. The weather had clouded up a
little but still a nice day. We had lots of Duke of Edinburgh groups
passing us with their huge back packs and bed rolls!! When we got up to
the tower (not too muddy) we read the notice board and saw that there was a
walk down to Leith Place and through the rhododendron walk. We had done
half the walk when we reached the notice board so followed the direction
posts down the hill on very steep steps then on along a track passing
several ponds and small streams. The bluebells are out in force and
everywhere is a carpet of blue. Crossing parkland in front of the old
building that is Leith Place, Mag said ‘all they need is the deer to make
it a deer park’ and then spotted one – only the one though!! Later we
saw another one with a fawn:) We then started the upward section of the
walk back towards our car park and this is the start of the rhododendron
walk. It was planted by the sister of Charles Darwin. The colours are
always a bit garish but they were beautiful and set off by the bluebells it
made it a wonderful sight. We completed the 2 ½ mile loop and carried on
to the van. Then it is just a 15-minute drive to Ewhurst and Rob at Sayers
Croft. Hannah was tutoring in the early evening but we had a lovely time
with Rob and Arlo and prepared the roast for when she got in. We are
parked up in the car park so returned to go to bed – easy peasy!
